WALK TO AUSANGATE
Many call it “La Montaña del Arcoíris”, “El Cerro Colorado”, the mountain of Ausangate and sometimes “The Mountain of the Seven Colors”. Ausangate (Awsanqati in Quechua) is the fifth highest mountain in Peru, its maximum altitude is 6,372 meters above sea level. It is located about 100 kilometers southeast of the city of Cusco.
The snow-covered walk of Ausangate is one of the most exciting experiences in walking routes in the department of Cusco. On the route you can easily see llamas, alpacas and vicuñas breeders, in addition to the local people who still keep their tradition with typical clothes and speaking Quechua, believing even in the Andean gods (the APUS, mountain spirits), the somewhat long walk (you walk between 6 to 8 hours a day) where it is recommended to prepare days before to not suffer havoc of height and fatigue.
Ausangate is the representative mountain of the Cusqueños Andes. It is situated in the Vilcanota mountain range with large lagoons with a bright green/blue color.
